Grab bucket overhead crane is a special type of double girder bridge crane. The QZ grab bucket overhead crane is for efficiently moving large-volume loose or irregular materials with less manpower. It's suitable for handling bulk materials in coal yards, scrap processing lines, waste treatment plants. etc.

Different from general-purpose hoists, it has a specialized grab mechanism integrated into the crane's structure. It uses a grab bucket to handle various bulk materials such as scrap metal, garbage, wood, sand, grain, coal slag, silt, wine lees, and more. The crane mainly consists of double main beams, end beams, trolley, grab bucket, running mechanism, electrical components, and cabin. The grab device is crucial for grabbing and placing goods.

Common grab types are single-rope, double-rope, and electric grabs. They can grip, hold, and release materials at the designated place. We have been producing these cranes and supplying them to over 30 countries' steel mills, ports, power plants, and recycling centers since 2006. Each crane meets CE certification and ISO quality management standards.

Grab Bucket Options

Selecting the right grab type for the material is crucial when specifying this crane. According to the size and shape of the lifting material, users can choose between flexible Double-flap Clamshell Grab or Electric Hydraulic Multi-petal Grab.

Flexible Double Flap Grab

A two-jaw design for loose granular materials like sand, gravel, coal fines etc. The cutting edges are overlay-welded with wear-resistant steel and a multi-layer seal prevents leakage. Filling degree reaches 95-100% at rated density (0.5-2.5 t/m³), affecting cycle productivity. These grabs weigh up to 3 tons. They are standard equipment on QZ cranes with capacities from 2 to 10 tons, and are also available on larger double-girder models up to 320 tons.

Electric Hydraulic Multi-petal Grab Bucket

A 4–8 jaw configuration for irregular, large-piece materials such as scrap steel, demolition waste, logs and bulky solid waste. The jaws adjust to piece shapes, important for inconsistent material sizes. Jaw plates are made of high tensile wear-resistant plate. Clients often use them on double-girder for high-density materials (1.8–3.0 t/m³). These grabs, weighing up to 11 tons, can handle materials of 3.2-30 tons.

Engineering Features

PLC-controlled automatic operation enables unmanned or semi-unmanned cycles under harsh conditions, reducing operator exposure and labour cost.

Three-phase induction motors with inverter control offer smooth acceleration and precise positioning, and reduce peak current at startup.

High-strength wear-resistant jaw plates comply with GB/T 24186 NM400/NM500 standards and can be replaced in the field without specialist tools.

Double-girder box-section main beams are FEA-verified under rated load, with deflection within L/1000 per ISO 4301, ensuring consistent grab positioning.

Work duty classes A5–A7 cover intermittent to intensive production cycles, with the specification depending on daily operating hours and load spectrum.

Double Girder Grab Overhead Crane Application

Steel Mills and Metallurgy Industry: Scrap and transport heavy materials such as iron ore, coke, steel, etc., in melt shops and raw material yards meeting requirements of high-intensity working. Orange peel grab for scrap, clamshell for ore and slag.

Power Generation industry: Handling coal, slag and other materials in thermal power plants to ensure the continuity of power production. Continuous cycle requirements make A6/A7 duty class standard.

Waste recycling and disposal: At waste recycling stations or garbage disposal plants, they transport waste like scrap metal, plastic, paper to improve waste disposal efficiency. Orange peel grab manages the size and density variation inherent in mixed feedstocks.

Mining industry: For loading and unloading and transportation of ore, adapting to complex geological and environmental conditions.

Warehousing and logistics center: Stacking and handling of bulk goods to improve warehousing and logistics efficiency.

Ports and terminals: For bulk commodity loading/unloading; double-girder units with 15–31.5 m span cover standard quay-side bay widths.

Building materials industry: Loading and unloading and handling of building materials such as sand, gravel, and cement clinker. Clamshell grabs with sealed jaws can minimize spillage.

Typical scenario (indicative): A 50 MW biomass power plant with a 24-hour fuel intake requirement specifies a double-girder clamshell crane, 10 t capacity, 20 m span, A6 duty class, with PLC auto-cycle for unattended night operation. This configuration eliminates one shift operator position while maintaining required throughput.
